This threaded mounting point fits into the shell of your spa, and allows you to screw in any filter cartridge with a 1 ½" SAE thread, like a PWW50, for example. 

You can often find this part in spas where the skimmer compartment is moulded directly into the acrylic shell. 

It connects to 2" pipe with a female / socket fitting.
